What do they do to babies in the nursery of a hospital?

You've just done the hard work of delivering your baby. Congratulations! The cord is cut, your baby is cleaned off, and you're handed your baby -- and then your baby is whisked off to a mystical place called the nursery. (Usually.) What then -- how is your baby cared for, and what else happens in the nursery? So much! Here's what your baby can expect during their stay.

  • Evaluate the baby. Weight, height, heart rate, skin tone, reflexes, respiratory rate, temperature etc. are monitored. Baby is given an Apgar score.
  • Bath and clean the baby. Dresses them in tiny baby caps and baby clothes and wrap them like little presents in a cloth to provide warmth.
  • Feed the baby regularly. Depending on mother’s choice: either breast milk or formula
  • Change diapers when they pee and poo.
  • Provide preventive care. Like vaccinations, with parental approval.
  • Provide active treatment, in case necessary.
  • Scheduled visits from neonatologist/pediatricians daily.
  • Let the baby sleep. Newborns sleep for 15–16 hours a day.
  • After all of the above, marvel at their cuteness!
