When the middle ear components become inflamed and infected, and fluid accumulates behind the eardrum, it can result in discomfort in the ear, commonly known as an earache. Your child may also exhibit a fever. Otitis media with effusion (OME) can occur after an ear infection subsides, and fluid remains trapped behind the eardrum.
