Breastfeeding may provide protection to infants from certain short and long-term illnesses and diseases. Infants who are breastfed have a reduced likelihood of developing asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Moreover, breastfed infants have a lower incidence of ear infections and gastrointestinal illnesses.
