How does using a car seat backwards benefit babies?

In the event of a crash, the rear-facing seat will absorb most of the force from the crash and will give the head, neck, and spine the support they need. When children ride forward-facing, their heads - which for toddlers are disproportionately large and heavy - will be thrown forward, which might result in injuries to the spine and head.
