Overprotective parenting refers to parents who hover or control their child's actions. Strict parenting deprives kids of the opportunity to internalize self-discipline and responsibility. Harsh limits may temporarily control behavior, but they don't help a child learn to self-regulate. Instead, harsh limits trigger a resistance to taking responsibility for themselves. Overprotective parenting leads to oversensitive adults, since it can actually reinforce anxiety in children. It has a major role in the development, maintenance and exacerbation of children's anxiety and is linked to higher occurrence of anxiety and depression in adult life. Overprotective parents will convey the message that the world is dangerous. Children raised by such parents will grow up to be anti-social.
