When do babies start teething? How long does teething last? When do children shed their baby teeth (primary teeth) and get their permanent teeth? What are teething signs and symptoms in an infant? What are toys or remedies that can offer relief to a teething infant? At what ages do babies get certain teeth?
In this video, Nurse Sarah covers the basics of teething for both parents and as a pediatric nursing review.
Teething is a normal process that occurs during the development of a child. Teething can occur as early as 3 months of age or even sooner. By around 10-12 months of age, most children have cut at least one of their 20 primary teeth.
The lower central incisors are usually the first of the primary teeth to emerge, but the upper central incisors are a close second. After these teeth, the lateral incisors usually emerge. However, the exact teething sequence or age can differ from child to child.
For example, my second child cut his lower central incisors first, and then his upper lateral incisors emerged, with the upper central incisors coming in soon after.
Children will eventually begin to shed their 20 primary teeth and their permanent teeth will begin to emerge around ages 6-7 years old.
Teething symptoms in babies can include red cheeks, tugging at the ear, painful red gums, excessive crying and tantrums, sleep disturbances, and more.
Some of the remedies you can try include teething toys, teething foods, and in severe cases, over-the-counter pain medication may be recommended by your pediatrician to alleviate pain (consult your doctor for frequency and dosage instructions).
