It's easy to encourage developmental skills for curious babies and toddlers through simple and fun toys, games and activities. Playing is learning! Play is how babies learn about themselves and the world around them. You can offer your 6- to 12-month-old anything that's safe for him to explore, even if it's not technically a “toy.” This is the age when babies may start playing more independently, although your little one might need to follow your lead at first. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play together, sing songs, read books, play with toys, do tummy time and make funny sounds together. Your baby will love it. Playing together helps you and your baby get to know each other. Other ideas for encouraging your baby to learn and play: Gently clap your baby's hands together or stretch arms (crossed, out wide, or overhead). Gently move your baby's legs as if pedaling a bicycle. Use a favorite toy for your baby to focus on and follow, or shake a rattle for your infant to find. Try to spend at least 5-10 minutes each day playing with your child. Begin with at least five minutes of special playtime. When parents first start using praise, description, imitation, and active listening, they find that it takes a lot of energy and focus. Babies learn a new task better when it's fun and they're in a relaxed and playful mood. Play can also stimulate your baby's imagination, helping them adapt and solve problems. Improve relationships and connection to others. Play increases the size of the prefrontal cortex, meaning that the brain is more efficient at making plans, solving problems, and regulating and identifying emotions, all things required for social successful social interactions. Here are some activities you can play with your baby while staying indoors: Tummy time. Lay your baby on his stomach for a short time while he's awake Baby mirror games Baby massage Puppet play Clap your baby's hands together Dance with your baby Smiling games   Toddlers should have opportunities to play every day, the AAP says. Many experts recommend giving toddlers at least an hour per day of free, unstructured (but still supervised) play where children can explore what interests them, along with at least 30 minutes of active, adult-led, structured play. It's perfectly okay to let your child play alone, even at a young age, as long as you're nearby and he's safe. So if your little one is looking at a book in his crib or sitting on the floor stacking cups (within ear- and eyeshot, of course), leave him be. Play is not only an easy, accessible and affordable way to get children more physically active, but it has the potential to improve a child's physical, emotional, social and cognitive well-being. It's not a frill or a waste of time.
