Bonding is the intense attachment that develops between parents and their baby. It makes parents want to shower their baby with love and affection. Bonding with newborns happens when you respond consistently to your baby with love, warmth and care. By sleeping next to its mother, the infant receives protection, warmth and emotional reassurance. Most babies develop a preference for their mother within 2 to 4 months of age. A mother's physical and emotional presence provides babies with two things, protection from stress and emotional regulation, both of which are important to healthy brain development and the child's future well-being.

Due to the physical closeness, the baby is more close to the mother than to anyone else in the family. As per a few studies, breastfed mothers are closer to their babies as compared to bottle-fed mothers. Babies that sleep with their parents have more regular heartbeats and breathing. They even sleep more soundly. And being close to the mother is even shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. This maternal emphatic bias has deep evolutionary underpinnings at the neural level to be selective and protective of her own offspring such that mothers' empathy promotes positive developmental outcomes, such as mood stability and regulated stress reactivity in developing youth.

Babies go through clingy stages because it's developmentally normal and appropriate. It's actually a sign that your baby is making progress. As parenting expert and author, Pinky McKay, says: “Newborns depend on close contact to adapt to the world outside the womb. Babies are looking to develop emotional bonds right from the first minute." The mother's heartbeat and unique movements are already imprinted on the baby's brain at birth, making them feel extra safe and secure in her arms. However, there is increasing evidence that the father-child relationship is just as strong as the mother-child bond, as long as there is enough interaction between dads and their kids from an early age.

Moms are nicer.  Because babies have more contact with their moms, they know their moms better and rely on them for support. As per research, boys who have a close relationship with their moms tend to have better performance in school. It is so because moms also cultivate the emotional intelligence of their sons. They teach them to be open, sensitive to their surroundings, and the feelings of others. With moms, children feel like they can let go and express how they feel, because they believe that their mom will make it better. Mothers are more critical of their daughters than their sons, and admit to having a stronger bond with their little boys, according to research.

While a baby's first attachment is usually with their mother, the bonds that babies form with their fathers are just as important. Though babies form attachment relationships with other adults who care for them, the bonds with their parents are the most important ones.

A mother is a son's first true love. A son, especially their first son, is a mother's last true love.
