The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents sleep in the same room as their baby, but not in the same bed as a baby. For at least the first six months, if possible. For the first few months, you'll need a crib, carrycot or Moses basket (a light, portable bassinet). Your baby needs to sleep somewhere that's safe, warm and not too far from you. Your newborn can sleep in a bassinet or a crib. This can be located in a parent's room, a sibling's room or in the newborn's own room. It's important that you have your baby sleep in a safe place.

Ideally you want your baby to be comfortable with his usual sleeping area so it's sometimes suggested to have your baby nap in his crib or bassinet even during the day. Don't overstress about where to nap your baby during the day at home. Either the crib, bassinet, pack n play, baby box or even your arms will do! For added comfort, swaddle your little one, especially if he's sleeping in a crib rather than a bassinet.

He should sleep in his own crib or bassinet (or in a co-sleeper safely attached to the bed), but shouldn't be in his own room until he is at least 6 months, better 12 months. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the best place for a baby to sleep is in his parents' bedroom. Having a baby sleep in a separate room increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and makes it more difficult to respond quickly to their needs. Sleep your baby in a safe cot in your room for the first 6-12 months. This reduces the risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) including SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents. It can also make it easier to settle and breastfeed your baby at night.

Some parents suggest that a nursery should be light during the day time, during naps for example, and dark at night so as to avoid confusion. Biologically speaking, the best lighting to use in your baby's nursery is none at all. A dark room at night helps set your infant's circadian rhythm for sleeping more at night and less during the day. Dim light and consistent noise levels might help babies and children go to sleep and stay asleep. To help your baby sleep better, reduce sudden noises and morning light and noise.

It's safe for your baby to nap on your chest as long as you remain awake and aware of the baby. But if you fall asleep too, it raises the risk of injury (or death) to your baby. Yet another reason why babies might like to sleep on your chest: the sound of your heartbeat. "It reproduces the in utero environment where mom's pulse was the primary and constant sound the baby heard," Nicole Porter, Ph. D., a sleep and fatigue specialist, told Romper for a previous article. You can only care for the baby when you're adequately reasonably sort of rested and balanced. The only situation where "keeping watch" might be sensible is if you're very worried about SIDS.

Your baby is reminded of the secure and comfy environment from where they just arrived. Plus, it helps your baby adjust during the more difficult sleep cycles and helps them stay asleep longer.
