A first birthday party is really for parents and their guests. Your baby won't remember this party, and may even be overwhelmed by it. But that doesn't mean you can't all have fun. 1st birthday is no less than a milestone in the life of parents and the child both. After all the struggles, survival and growth they achieve this together. So it becomes a special day to celebrate. Its the day when reminiscent of the birth of a baby, the experience of being new parents came all over through in mind.

The 1st birthday is called the first anniversary after taking birth, or one year milestone. It's considered a milestone because it marks one year since the baby's birth. Start planning about two months out to give yourself enough time to plan properly. Start considering first birthday party ideas about two months in advance of the big day. Choosing the theme, making the guest list and sending invites are the first things that need to happen.

Generally, we tend to have vague memories of events that occur between the ages of three and seven. It means that bub is unlikely to remember special occasions like their first birthday party, however extravagant the cake, or regular events like weekly trips to the beach. Your baby can safely enjoy cake on their first birthday. Babies are encouraged to start eating solid foods starting at around 6 months of age and by the time that they turn a year old they should have some mobility and idea of how to feed themselves with their own hands.

Cake mash. The craze started in the US, and over the past few years, parents across the UK have been joining in. A cake smash is where a one-year-old gets very messy with a cake and a professional photographer captures the moment. After that, there is often a bubble bath, which is also caught on camera for posterity. In case you're unfamiliar, a smash cake is basically a tiny cake meant to be relished by your kiddo on her first birthday. And since 1-year-olds are pretty much lawless, that means she'll likely dig in by using her fingers, or “smashing” her face into it the second it's placed in front of her.

If you are planning to have it intimate, the party might include grandparents, aunts and uncles and a few baby friends from your daycare or play groups. If you want to go all out and have a huge bash, invite extended family, friends, coworkers who have kids and so on. Send invitations out at least 2-3 weeks before the party. Allow more time if the party is around a holiday or Christmas so guests have plenty of notice to mark their calendars to attend. Don't get wordy. Only the party details, date, time and location.

You don't have to plan any activities. One-year-old birthday parties can be as simple as letting the kiddos play while adults mingle. But if you want to keep everyone entertained, you can prepare a few simple group games or activities ahead of time.

Simple celebration without a party:

  • Have a first birthday celebration at home.
  • Go camping.
  • Start a birthday tradition.
  • Go to a local event.
  • Go to an amusement park.
  • Go to a children's museum

The time when all parents reflect on how quickly the year has gone, a child's first birthday is one of the most special anniversaries in life.
