Babies need fresh air and light, and they need to get out. According to most pediatric health experts, infants can be taken out in public or outside right away as long as parents follow some basic safety precautions. Getting out, and in particular, getting outside in nature, is good for parents and babies. A healthy baby can go outside every day, even in winter, as long as the temperature is not too cold (down to about –12°C) and it's not too windy. She'll be stimulated and distracted, and get plenty of oxygen.  Most doctors agree that there's no need to wait until your baby is 1 or 2 months old to take them out and about. However, you also shouldn't feel pressure to do it before you're ready. Babies should not be outside for prolonged periods of time when the temperature is over 90° F. Babies also lose heat faster than adults, so they get cold more easily.

Recent scientific studies show that infants regularly exposed to nature are developing more brain synapses than those who don't get outside. Babies are soaking in not only the fresh air, but their senses are being actively stimulated by the natural world around them. Fresh air cleans children's lungs, ridding them of impurities such as car fumes and dust, which playing outside will help clense. In a home with poor air circulation, you might think the most obvious problem is that we are all breathing in and recycling each other's breath

Fresh air helps a baby sleep well at night and nap soundly. And even if you don't feel comfortable putting your baby down for naps outdoors, you can certainly carve out some time to take a walk or go to the park with your baby. 30 to 60 minutes of outdoor play time per day but even 10 minute are a good idea. Babies who nap outdoors have better naps as the colder air helps them sleep longer. Babies who nap outdoors may have fewer colds. Spending more time outdoors decreases exposure to germs in enclosed spaces. Babies who nap outside may sleep longer, get higher quality sleep, and are exposed to fewer germs as compared to when they sleep indoors, Katie Palmer, a London-based sleep consultant, told Insider. But the practice isn't without risks. A baby could develop hypothermia while sleeping outdoors during the winter.

When is it too cold to go out with newborns and babies? In general, playing outside at all in temperatures or wind chills below -15 degrees F should be avoided because baby's exposed skin can start to freeze within minutes. Wind chills make the temperature feel much colder than it actually is due to wind gusts. Babies that are too cold will not exert the energy it takes to cry, and may be uninterested in feeding. Their energy is being consumed by trying to stay warm. A baby that is dangerously chilled will have cold hands and feet and even baby's chest will be cold under his or her clothes.

It's a whole new world visually! As you walk your baby using a snuggly or infant carrier, they'll enjoy the rhythm of your movements. This vestibular input helps coordinate movement between the eyes, head and body, helping your baby develop a sense of balance and visual-spacial perception. A baby carrier or sling means you can keep your hands free while you're out. Make sure you adjust it so it is comfortable for you. Wear comfortable shoes and be careful of tripping when you bend over or walk on uneven surfaces. A baby carrier or sling is not a good idea in hot weather because your baby can overheat.

The idea that babies have to stay inside the house for several weeks after they're born is FALSE. In fact, as long as your baby is healthy, getting some fresh air can be great for mom and baby if you take a few precautions. Be careful not to overdress or underdress your baby when you leave the house.
