Congratulations on your newborn! A newborn infant, or neonate, is a child under 28 days of age. During these first 28 days of life, the child is at highest risk of dying. The vast majority of newborn deaths take place in developing countries where access to health care is low. A few minutes after birth, most infants open their eyes and start to look around at their environment. Although a newborn spends about 16 hours a day sleeping, the time a baby is awake can be busy.

At birth your baby sees only in black and white, and shades of gray. Nerve cells in the brain and retina of the eye are not fully developed. They also have trouble focusing, and are not very light-sensitive yet. Infants' eyes are large compared to their bodies. Newborn babies can hear fairly well, but not perfectly. The middle ear of a newborn is full of fluid and this impairs hearing to a small extent. Additionally, the entire hearing apparatus is somewhat immature. That's why newborn babies respond best to high-pitched, exaggerated sounds and voices. The tiniest newborn babies can sniff out breast milk and even lactating women because breast milk has very specific fragrances that are extremely attractive to babies. Infants can also recognize their own mothers simply by smell.

A newborn doesn't realise they are a separate person. Infants in the first eight weeks have no control over their movements and all their physical activity. Essential newborn care involves immediate care at the time of birth, and essential care during the entire newborn period. You'll probably spend a large part of the first few days after birth looking at your baby .

Why my newborn baby's face is red?

Red marks, scratches, bruises, and petechiae (tiny specks of blood that have leaked from small blood vessels in the skin) are all common on the face and other body parts. They're caused by the trauma of squeezing through the birth canal. These will heal and disappear during the first week or two of life.

By the time your baby is three months of age, she will have made a dramatic transformation from a totally dependent newborn to an active and responsive infant. She'll lose many of her newborn reflexes while acquiring more voluntary control of her body.

How often does my newborn need a bath? There's no need to give your newborn baby a bath every day. Three times a week might be enough until your baby becomes more mobile. Bathing your baby too much can dry out your baby's skin.

Contrary to popular myth, it's impossible for parents to hold or respond to a baby too much, child development experts say. Infants need constant attention to give them the foundation to grow emotionally, physically and intellectually. The most probable reason your little babe is rubbing her face on you is because of an involuntary primitive motor reflex newborns have called a rooting reflex, which signals that your baby is hungry. Rooting helps her find the nipple when it's time for her to eat, according to Sinai.

Is it OK to let newborn cry?

Crying it out:

If your baby doesn't appear sick, you've tried everything, and he or she is still upset, it's OK to let your baby cry. If you need to distract yourself for a few minutes, place your baby safely in the crib and make a cup of tea or call a friend.
