Certainly, one of the main reasons babies cry on planes is that they are not good at pressure equalization in the middle ear, as the infantile Eustachian tube does not generally function as well as. According to Doug and Sanjay, the back row of the plane is the best place to sit when traveling with a baby. Over the next shot of the aircraft's galley, they explain that since the back of the plane is near the galley, it's easier to get up and walk around if a fussy baby needs settling.

Babies love routine. They know that at night they get their bath, are wrapped in a soft blanket, have a little milk, get a bedtime story and are kissed goodnight. Whatever your routine is with your baby when you want them to nap or go to bed at night, do it on the plane. The plane is in a noisy environment. Do not use cotton balls or earplugs because your baby could choke on them if they fall out. You can find ear muffs especially made for infants for sale on the internet.

For kids especially babies and young children, it can feel especially odd and even scary at first. But it's a common, normal part of flying. This sometimes uncomfortable sensation is related to pressure changes in the air space behind the eardrum (the middle ear).

How do I keep my baby quiet on a plane?

  1. Use a Pacifier or Bottle During Takeoff and Landing.
  2. Distract With Toys.
  3. Plan Flights Around Nap Time.
  4. Know Your Meds.
  5. Give It Time.

Tips for getting your baby to sleep on the plane:

  1. Choose a night flight.
  2. Choose seats carefully.
  3. Bring familiar items with a scent from home.
  4. Try to cover the light.
  5. Dress your little ones in their pajamas.
  6. Request a baby bassinet.
  7. Try rocking your little one.
  8. Pack extra snacks.

Children swallow more often when they are awake. Also, waking up with ear pain can be frightening for the child. Give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before takeoff or landing. Or, use nasal spray or drops before takeoff or landing. Nurse your baby during takeoff and landing when traveling by airplane. This will help to protect your child from ear pain due to cabin pressure changes. Feed your baby on demand. The best way to maintain your milk supply is to breastfeed whenever your baby is hungry.

They need to move around and get some energy out before the flight if you want them to hopefully be peaceful during the flight. Toddlers thrive on routine. While a bath is out, put your toddler in their pajamas and read books. Sing the same songs you typically do at home before bed. Follow the same bedtime routine on the plan with your toddler, just like you would at home.

If you think it is unlikely that your baby will sleep during the flight, then choose to fly early in the morning when your baby is at her happiest. If you can fly around at nap time, this will be your best bet to get your baby to sleep on the plane.
